Community Advocate: West Marin & The Canal
Job Specifications:

This is a full-time position offering flexible hours, requiring residency in Marin County and in-depth familiarity with West Marin or the Canal areas. The position entails evening and weekend work, as necessary, and a minimum of two days per week in the MCF office.

Position Purpose:
The Community Advocate for West Marin and The Canal is an exciting new role within MCF, aimed at bolstering community resilience in these specific regions of Marin County. The position is instrumental in fostering collaborative efforts to tackle urgent social challenges and propel MCF’s mission forward. You will collaborate closely with a wide array of invested parties, including community members, grassroots organizations, and governmental bodies, to drive impactful initiatives and champion social equity. Additionally, you will engage with various public and private entities across West Marin and The Canal, such as schools, clubs, religious organizations, etc. to cultivate inclusive community partnerships.
Reports to:
The Community Advocate for West Marin and The Canal reports to Chief Community Impact Officer.
Essential Functions:
• Lead the place-based strategy and initiatives for the assigned area.
• Develop and maintain relationships with community members, leaders, and organizations to understand their needs, priorities, and challenges.
• Manage a select grant portfolio focused on empowering community organizing efforts and facilitating constructive dialogues within the designated geographic area.
• Collaborate with local organizations, government agencies, and other invested parties to leverage resources and support community-driven initiatives.
• Organize and facilitate community meetings, workshops, and events to raise awareness, foster dialogue, and mobilize action around key issues.
• Lead the development and implementation of advocacy campaigns and initiatives to address systemic issues and drive policy change.
• Provide training, resources, and support to empower community members to advocate for themselves and effectively engage in civic participation.
• Liaise with the Learning and Evaluation Officer to collect, analyze, and report data on community needs, assets, and outcomes, to inform programmatic strategies and measure impact.
• Liaise with the Communications department to develop and disseminate outreach materials, including newsletters, social media content, and press releases, to raise awareness and engage invested parties in MCF’s work.
• Represent the Foundation on external committees, panels, etc., as required.
• Strategically allocate resources to bolster and enhance equity objectives within Marin County.
• Perform additional responsibilities as delegated.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
• Bachelor's degree in community development, social work, public policy, or a related field required.
• Proficiency in Spanish is essential. Grantmaking or fundraising experience is a plus.
• Proven experience in community organizing, advocacy, or related fields, with a strong understanding of social justice issues and grassroots organizing principles.
• Lived experience in the communities of West Marin and The Canal through affiliation with nonprofits, local government, or volunteer leadership.
• Demonstrate a strong passion for, and a commitment to, social change and equity.
• Comprehension of the mechanisms necessary to initiate systemic changes within Marin County is essential.
• Proficient writing, editing, and proofreading skills coupled with the ability to gather and organize information effectively.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the ability to effectively learn and utilize additional technology systems used by MCF.
• Strong strategic planning and implementation skills, coupled with research and synthesizing abilities.
• Excellent organizational and prioritization skills, efficiently managing daily tasks, multiple requests, and projects, while handling long-term assignments.
• Excellent customer service and communication skills encompassing listening, interpersonal, oral, presentation, and written abilities for multiple and diverse audiences.
• Exhibit a high degree of professionalism, judgement, and flexibility, and uphold high ethical standards.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to thrive in a team environment.

Compensation & Benefits:
The Community Advocate role is a full-time exempt position with full health benefits (including medical, vision and dental), 403(b) retirement plan with an employer contribution of 12%, life and disability insurance, and generous time off and other benefits. Salary for this position is $155,000 to $160,000 per year.
