This position is full-time and requires a minimum of two days per week onsite for those residing in the Bay Area.

Position Purpose:

The Senior Advisor, Elevated Impact (SA-EI) manages relationships with a diverse portfolio of institutions, individuals and families utilizing various philanthropic vehicles at MCF, including DAFs, Supporting Organizations, and other types of funds, to elevate their impact in the community. This includes clients with potential philanthropic assets ranging from $2M to $10M+.

This role entails offering ongoing guidance, advice, structure, support and/or strategic direction customized to the charitable pursuits of each client.

Reports to:

The Sr. Advisor Elevated Impact reports to the VP of The Family Office of Philanthropy (TFO).

Essential Functions:

  • Oversee a portfolio comprising funds with philanthropic assets ranging from $2M to $10M+. Act as a philanthropic advisor to the individuals and families who have established these funds, whether in a sole advisory capacity or as part of a team. Responsible for managing MCF’s relationship with these clients and, upon their request, extends support to their next generation(s).
  • Lead a service team and act as the primary contact for a major partner as a supporting organization of MCF. Coordinate with the entire service team to ensure superb customer service to this partner to meet their needs as an intermediary grantmaker and nonprofit organization working in the forefront of climate justice.
  • Encourage, educate, and guide clients in their grantmaking endeavors through a strategic perspective. Collaborate with each client on various projects, which may include crafting and implementing giving plan funding strategies. Facilitate family philanthropy programs and retreats and conducts issue-specific landscape research, organization analysis, and the creation of learning journeys for clients. Assist in philanthropic budgeting, spend-down strategies, and legacy planning. Manage relationships with prospective and current grantees, including conducting site visits, developing proposals, reviewing and negotiating agreements, and monitoring grants.
  • Collaborate across teams to evaluate donors’ capacity, identify gaps between donors’ needs and MCF services to design and execute a plan to enhance the relationship and upgrade donors to Virtuoso or Bespoke levels when appropriate, thereby increasing their impact in the community.
  • Collaborate closely with clients’ wealth advisors, family office staff, and consultants to ensure seamless coordination between the clients’ philanthropic endeavors and their wealth management and stewardship goals.
  • Partner with clients’ professional advisors and MCF’s Philanthropic Planning team to facilitate new charitable contributions into existing funds. Maintains expertise in various major charitable giving vehicles to effectively guide clients through the process.
  • Collaborate with the VP of TFO and Chief Philanthropy Officer to envision and elevate MCF’s partnerships with supporting organizations and their respective donors. This role involves creatively linking donors with the diverse range of services provided by MCF, actively engaging with them to amplify their impact through the utilization of additional services and opportunities offered by MCF.
  • Stay informed about relevant issues, trends and developments impacting the philanthropic sector.
  • Lead one or more cross-functional team projects aimed at enhancing and implementing services for Virtuoso or Bespoke funds. This includes organizing educational events and unique-access opportunities to engage Virtuoso clients actively and meaningfully in their philanthropic endeavors, foster connections among Virtuoso clients, and strengthen their engagement with MCF.
  • Contribute to the development of MCF’s tiers of services.
  • Spearhead thought leadership initiatives, including speaking engagements at industry conferences, and publishing thought leadership articles.
  • Engage in collaborative efforts and contribute to special projects across various departments within the organization.
  • As lead relationship manager of a portfolio of donors, utilize comprehensive expertise in specific issues across MCF departments to support donors. This involves facilitating effective philanthropy by aligning donor interests with community needs and driving increased financial support to communities in need.
  • Cultivate donors’ interest and financial support in MCF philanthropic vehicles and strategic initiatives and offerings.
  • Participate in meetings and discussions with nonprofit and thought leaders with regional, national, and international issue expertise on pertinent issues. This ensures up-to-date awareness of programs and funding requirements aligned with clients’ existing and potential areas of interests. Actively contributes to MCF’s continuous process of curating, collecting, and disseminating this knowledge.
  • Offer technical assistance, as needed, to organizations either currently supported by clients or under consideration for future support.
  • Responsibilities may shift and evolve based on the implementation of new strategic priorities at MCF.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as delegated.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Minimum of ten years’ experience in the philanthropy, nonprofit, or a related sector is required. Prior experience as a funder or philanthropy advisor is strongly preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in a relationship management role that served high-net-worth individuals.
  • Demonstrate a passion and deep commitment to Philanthropy and the nonprofit sector.
  • Industry certification such as CAP and 21/64 preferred.
  • Proven experience and interest in directly engaging with high-net-worth multi- generational families, with a demonstrated ability to adapt work styles to accommodate different client needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to connect the dots and creatively engage donors to deepen their relationship with MCF and increase impact in the community.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with other third-party entities, including as wealth managers, family offices, or consultants, on behalf of a shared client is highly valued.
  • Demonstrate meticulous attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and precision in all aspects of work.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to thrive in a team environment. Capable of cultivating and sustaining positive working relationships with Foundation staff, community members, elected officials, the media, colleagues in other foundations, and members of the nonprofit sector.
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational and prioritization skills, efficiently managing daily tasks, multiple requests, and projects, while handling long-term assignments.
  • Demonstrate strong strategic planning and implementation skills, coupled with research and synthesizing abilities.
  • Proficient writing, editing, and proofreading skills coupled with the ability to gather and organize information effectively.
  • Self-starter with an interest and ability for both independent and collaborative teamwork.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills encompassing listening, interpersonal, oral, presentation, and written abilities for multiple and diverse audiences.
  • Exhibit a high degree of professionalism, judgement, and flexibility, enabling effective collaboration with clients and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
  • Exhibit a strong commitment to personal and professional integrity and uphold high ethical standards.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point) and the ability to effectively learn and utilize additional technology systems used by MCF.

Compensation & Benefits:

The Philanthropic Services Advisor role is a full-time exempt position with full health benefits (including medical, vision and dental), 403(b) retirement plan with an employer contribution of 12%, life and disability insurance, and generous time off and other benefits. The salary for this position is $150,000-$160,000
