Director of Philanthropic Planning - Institutional Philanthropy

Position Purpose:

MCF is seeking an innovative, results- and relationship-oriented professional that can build a robust network of stakeholders that view MCF as their philanthropic partner of choice. This role focuses on cultivating relationships with institutional funders such as private foundations, corporate entities, and government agencies – and their service providers -- to understand their philanthropic objectives and position MCF as a critical resource in achieving these objectives.

The Director of Philanthropic Planning, Institutional Philanthropy, is a key member of the dynamic Philanthropic Planning Team and steward of MCF’s brand as a trusted philanthropic resource. The Director fosters relationships with a premier referral network for institutional funders to drive lead generation and revenue growth for MCF to continue to deliver outsized impact for its clients through exceptional services and garner support for its strategic initiatives.

The Director of Philanthropic Planning, Institutional Philanthropy, reports to the Vice President of Philanthropic Planning

Essential Functions:

  • Engage and build relationships with referral networks that work directly with institutional funders to position MCF as a thought partner that can help take their philanthropy to the next level. Relationship building can be done by attending one-on-one meetings, delivering presentations to relevant client-facing teams and representing MCF at conferences and networking events.
  • Stay informed about trends and best practices in corporate philanthropy and institutional giving to establish MCF’s reputation as a premier provider and trusted resource.
  • Generate interest in MCF's services and offerings, funneling qualified leads into the organization's pipeline for deeper engagement to grow the Foundation’s portfolio of institutional clients and mobilizer resources to drive transformative impact for communities locally and across the world.
  • Effectively convey the value of MCF’s brand, services and offerings to aid private foundations, corporate partners, and government agencies in meeting their philanthropic objectives.
  • Lead the preparation, presentation, and submission of compelling RFPs, service proposals and sales presentations tailored to institutional funders.
  • Collaborate with Philanthropic Planning peers on business development opportunities to identify who is best-suited to take an opportunity to closing.
  • Provide feedback that will inform the design, development, and launch of new client offerings.
  • Assist in drafting fund agreements and amendments, ensuring regulatory compliance and alignment with the Foundation’s mission and objectives, while also fostering positive relationships with donors and beneficiaries.
  • Maintain membership/board position with influential associations within the ecosystem of institutional philanthropy, actively participating in their meetings.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as delegated.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A minimum of 5 years of progressively advancing experience in development or consultative sales, with a specialization in engaging institutions such as foundations, corporate entities and government agencies.
  • Proven track record of setting and achieving sales/revenue goals.
  • Demonstrate meticulous attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and precision in all aspects of work.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills coupled with the ability to gather and organize information effectively.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point) and the ability to effectively learn and utilize additional technology systems used by MCF.
  • Demonstrate strong strategic planning and implementation skills, coupled with research and synthesizing abilities.
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational and prioritization skills, efficiently managing daily tasks, multiple requests, and projects, while handling long-term assignments.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills encompassing listening, interpersonal, oral, presentation, and written abilities for multiple and diverse audiences.
  • Exhibit a high degree of professionalism, judgement, and flexibility, enabling effective collaboration with clients and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to thrive in a team environment. Capable of cultivating and sustaining positive working relationships with Foundation staff, community members, elected officials, the media, colleagues in other foundations, and members of the nonprofit sector.

Compensation & Benefits:

The Director of Philanthropic Planning - Institutional Philanthropy role is a full-time exempt position with full health benefits (including medical, vision and dental), 403(b) retirement plan with an employer contribution of 12%, life and disability insurance, and generous time off and other benefits. The salary for this position is $150,000 - $155,000.
