This position is full-time and requires a minimum of two days per week onsite for those residing in the Bay Area.

Position Purpose:

The Marin Community Foundation (MCF) is seeking a Director for Affordable Housing & Homelessness Initiative under its new strategic vision. The new Affordable Housing & Homelessness initiative seeks to reach functional zero chronic homelessness and achieve affordable housing for all Marin County residents. The leader of this initiative will advance and implement the initiative strategy to maximize community impact. The Director will be knowledgeable about affordable housing and homelessness issue areas and work closely with the community, grantees, and MCF leadership. The Director will be accountable for achieving the strategy’s outcomes, aligning additional funding to the initiative, disbursing existing initiative funding, evaluating progress toward initiative goals, and tracking and adjusting program strategy as needed. This initiative and position are currently approved through June 2028. In 2028, we will re-evaluate the initiative and opportunity for extension.

As a representative of MCF, the Director for Affordable Housing & Homelessness Initiative engages grantees, donors, the Board of Directors, advisors, consultants, vendors, and the public, and represents the organization in strategic venues and positions the organization as a productive and effective potential partner.

Reports to:

The Director for Affordable Housing & Homelessness Initiative reports to the Chief Strategy Officer.

Essential Functions:

  • Identify and implement opportunities to advance the Affordable Housing & Homelessness initiative in Marin County, ensuring that all grant and loan resources are dedicated to the highest-return activities.
  • Build partnerships and bring together invested parties.
  • Catalyze additional public and private funding, including applying for competitive grants and raising funds from donors within and beyond Marin.
  • Leverage policy expertise to advance policy opportunities aligned with MCF’s strategies, leading MCF’s relationship with policymakers throughout and beyond Marin County.
  • Implement and execute the initiative’s strategy, identifying high-potential grantees and loan recipients, shaping grants and loans to them, measuring progress toward strategic goals and outcomes, and reporting to the MCF leadership and Board.
  • Cultivate and oversee relationships with grantee partners. Evaluate and select potential grantees to receive initiative funding.
  • Establish key milestones based on quantitative and qualitative analysis of the situation. Learn from initial grantmaking and refine strategy to optimize impact.
  • Identify opportunities to leverage a subsidized loan fund in alignment with the initiative’s goals; coordinate the preparation, facilitation, and distribution of loans.
  • Collaborate and communicate with the Marin 24x7 Team and MCF leadership to maintain alignment between the initiative’s efforts and the foundation’s strategic direction.
  • Partner with the Philanthropic Partnerships team to share initiative specifics, refine strategic components to attract aligned funding, develop fundraising materials, and engage with potential donors who share our mission.
  • Develop relationships with County and regional affordable housing and homelessness stakeholders to support MCF’s initiative in Marin.
  • Stay up to date with affordable housing and homelessness philanthropic and policy solutions, as well as County practices.
  • Strong management skills encompassing the ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports, participate in staff selection, provide, or coordinate staff training, offer timely, relevant, and accurate feedback related to performance, and administer disciplinary action as warranted.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as delegated.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Ten or more years (15 strongly preferred) of proven success in experiences described in the essential functions of the job description, including in housing policy, affordable housing development, and/or homelessness services and resolution.
  • Experience in affordable housing financing and loan funds, blending public and private financing; experience designing and executing impact investing and other philanthropic investment options.
  • Experience leading policy strategies and leveraging 501(c)4 resources for policy advocacy. Connections with regional housing policymakers and experts preferred.
  • Experience in program management at a major institution and/or experience working in or with the nonprofit sector is highly desirable.
  • Expertise in affordable housing and homelessness strategies.
  • Proven track record of raising public and private funds to housing and homelessness priorities (e.g., developing donor partnerships and collaboratives, securing state and federal grants, aligning funds to housing and homelessness priorities).
  • Excellent facilitation skills and experience convening diverse partners.
  • Demonstrate meticulous attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and precision in all aspects of work.
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational and prioritization skills, efficiently managing daily tasks, multiple requests, and projects, while handling long-term assignments.
  • Proficient writing, editing, and proofreading skills coupled with the ability to gather and organize information effectively.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point) and the ability to effectively learn and utilize additional software programs used by MCF.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills encompassing listening, interpersonal, oral, presentation, and written abilities for multiple and diverse audiences.
  • Exhibit a high degree of professionalism, judgement, and flexibility, enabling effective collaboration with clients and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to thrive in a team environment. Capable of cultivating and sustaining positive working relationships with Foundation staff, community members, elected officials, the media, colleagues in other foundations, and members of the nonprofit sector.
  • Exhibit a strong commitment to personal and professional integrity and uphold high ethical standards.
  • Genuine interest in social issues including climate, housing and homelessness, equity, and justice, with a commitment to ongoing learning and development.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • The Program Coordinator role is a full-time exempt position with full health benefits (including medical, vision and dental), 403(b) retirement plan with an employer contribution of 12%, life and disability insurance, and generous time off and other benefits.

  • The salary for this position is $175,000 - $180,000.
